Heresy

1 Corinthians 11:19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

Heresies though generally looked down upon, can actually be the friend of the Christian. They are a useful tool to aid in discerning those who are actually brethren in Christ, from those who are mere professors.

In general heresies will fall into two categories, Christological and Soteriological. The first has to do with the person of Christ, the other has to do with the means of reconciliation between God and man, AKA the work of Christ. Having right understanding in these two areas is the center of biblical Christianity, which if not firmly biblical will easily bring those who are not brethren to the light.
